Raath & Associates successfully completed a non-invasive bioremediation of the Rhino Pond at Auckland Zoo in 2025 using the BluePlanet microbial solution in combination with nano-aeration technology. The project achieved a significant reduction in sludge, duckweed, and algae within a 10-week period, restoring water clarity and improving pond ecology without disrupting animal habitats. The work was carried out collaboratively with the Zoo team and delivered at no cost to Auckland Zoo. The outcome demonstrated the effectiveness of this innovative, environmentally sustainable approach.
Water clarity at inlet. Pre-trial, it was very turbid due to upstream contamination.
Healthy hydrophytes visible from surface. Pre-trial, the water was so turbid there was no way of identifying any aquatic life inside the pond.
Carcas of duck weed, eradicated through explosion of root system due to Nanobubble charge.
Nanobubble generators can be configured to enhance water treatment in a variety of installations.
We have seen at Whiritoa that the DO injected to primary treatment pond has confirmed values of 8.6 mg/l about a meter from the outlet of the Nanobubbler in the pond.
Initially when we installed the Nanobubbler the DO in the 1550 m2 by 1.5 m deep pond was 0.35 and two weeks later it was 8.6 mg/l. The pond was knocked over during December and had a PH reading of 13.6. We managed to remediate the ponds within four weeks.
